If you avoid these following things, your chances of your computer becoming infected will go down greatly.

1.       Pop-ups that offer unbelievable deal or claim you have won something.  But these pop-up are a major cause of viruses.  If a pop-up come up on your screen hit Ctrl+F4 to remove it.  Never click on the pop-up itself.
2.       Free game and music downloads.  These downloads are free for a reason.
3.       Internet Videos and Pictures.  Be careful what you are watching and downloading online.  Make sure you are watching them on a trusted website.  Videos placed on social networking site are not always safe.
4.       Free Software.  Again, it is free for a reason.  If you download software go directly to the company’s website and download it from there.  If you use 3rd Party website, do your research first and make sure it can be trusted.
5.   Other People's Flash Drives. The convenience of flash drives has enabled viruses to spread faster. Viruses can embed in files, which are transferred throught the flash drive. It is advised to always scan flash drives before transferring contents onto your computer.
6.       Email Attachments.  Never open an .exe file in an email unless you have been advised that it safe by the person that sent it.  Email is the main way to spread viruses.  Be very careful opening attachments; never open an attachment from someone you do not know.
If you avoid these things while online and take these extra precautions, you will decrease your chances of getting a virus.  The other way to decrease your chance is to purchase and install a good Virus Protection Software.
